This article examines Mohamed Soula’s study entitled “The Narrative System of Film: Yesterday’s Friends by Hassan Benjelloun as a Model — A Semiotic Approach”, adopting an epistemological and analytical approach aimed at uncovering its scientific and methodological foundations, as well as identifying the theoretical references and methodological premises upon which the critic built his critical project. The study also seeks to evaluate the coherence between Soula’s methodological choices and the nature of the cinematic corpus he analyzed on the one hand, and between his theoretical and practical critical practice on the other. Furthermore, it explores the degree of consistency between the study’s objectives and hypotheses and its results and recommendations. Finally, it assesses the limits and effectiveness of the semiotic method in the analysis of film discourse as practiced by Mohamed Soula.
